I am a newbie to cocoa and would like to know the basics to get
started, i.e. do I use just a NSImageView, or NSButton, or do I
need to look at something completely different?
Any code examples would be appreciated, of course.

One more suggestion: Look at the images in iPhoto's bundle:

/Applications/iPhoto.app/Resources/burn_anim*.tiff

You'll need to make similar images for your animation and then cycle
through them using NSTimer or NSAnimation.
