It all depends.

At least with Tiger (I have 10.4.7; Mail.app version 2.1), the font is configurable.

The font the the left-side list uses is the 'Mailbox font'. I leave mine set at (which I think is the default) Lucida Grande 11.

So just use [NSFont systemFontOfSize:11]
