Whether or not something is patented is off topic for the list, but it may also create legal problems for those of us who read the list if (by some chance) one of us ends up in court for infringing a patent that gets mentioned here. (e.g. in the U.S. a lawyer might use the list archives to argue that the defendant was aware of the patent when they infringed it, which would trigger the triple damages rule...)


So *please* don't post any information about patents here.

And if you're in any doubt, or you want to use one of their UI elements on another platform or on the web, you can always ask Apple directly; the worst they can say is "No", which is a lot better than landing yourself in court for copyright and/or patent infringement.
