interface to metadata list

Is there a way to get a list of all the metadata items available through spotlight?

I want to generate a drop down that allows the user to choose the filetypes and or the metadata items much like the finder search has.

I'm guessing I'm just missing the pertinent documentation. A nudge in the right direction would be appreciated.
