Confusing terms - menu/menubar

The terminology Apple uses for menus and the menubar is confusing. In particular, is the NSMenu object returned by the NSApplication method mainMenu the menubar? I wouldn't think the menubar is a menu, but Interface Builder refers to the menubar as the Main menu!

If mainMenu is NOT the menubar, is it the "Apple" menu or the next one - the one that has the application's name?
