Thanks for that reminder. I just did what you said. In the popup "Open
with" menu was six instances of my app, three each of two different
versions, with no paths indicated (arghhhh!). So, instead, I clicked button
"Other" and navigated to the latest rev I wanted to open it this document.
After this, it still did not work, but it started working after I rebuilt
the Launch Services database by doing this command:
/System/Library/Frameworks/ApplicationServices.framework/\
Frameworks/LaunchServices.framework/Support/lsregister \
-kill -r -domain local -domain system -domain user
It seems to me like launching apps could be smarter than this after 25 years
of Macintosh, but, "Oh, well!"
