I'd take a look at MimeTex (http://www.forkosh.com/mimetex.html). It's GPL
licensed, and seems a lot quicker than the pdflatex/PDFKit approach (at
least when compared to LaTeXIT), though at the cost of quality. I assume you
could wrangle it to display the formula contents inside an NSImageView.
