I've done a few searches and dug around the CGS* private headers looking for an answer to this, but I'm stumped. Is there any method to use a windowNumber to resolve back to an NSWindow instance?

Don't use the CGS routines. They are subject to change - at any time - as they are Apple Private routines. If you want to do some functionality that is only exported via a CGS routine, please file a feature request for that functionality.
