Pretty much what Scott said. Every sitution is different, and requires a slightly different approach.

Know what you want to make, the requirements of what you want to make, and how those requirements will need to be accomplished, and then figure out how best to approach what you come up with. This applies to the foundations, the UI, a house, a car engine, anything. :-)
