This is slightly off-topic, but not entirely.

If some of the "Developer/Example" code shipped by apple appears in a
modified form in one's own App, what is the position with regards the
license agreement?

The position is that you must follow the license agreement, which is reproduced at the top of every file. If you don't understand it, you will need to ask a lawyer. License agreements are usually pretty clear, certainly no less so than computer programs, so most developers should be capable of working out for themselves what the license means.

Should it be removed, or does it need to remain? Should some form of
acknowledgment be made, or would Apple rather wash their hands of it once
it's been through the mincer?

I quote:

"provided that if you redistribute the Apple Software in its entirety and
without modifications, you must retain this notice and the following
text and disclaimers in all such redistributions of the Apple Software."

That part of the license answers the question above, I believe. You also need to take heed of the text just after that about not using Apple's name to promote your product. Again, if you don't understand it, you need to talk to a lawyer. People on the developer mailing lists usually won't give you legal advice, because---AFAIK---in various parts of the United States (California in particular), it's illegal to do so unless you're a qualified lawyer.

Perhaps this question should be directed at email@hidden, but I was
concerned about getting a response.

They will tell you exactly what I did above; they administer licensing for Apple, but they aren't lawyers and won't try to explain the license terms to you. If you want help interpreting the license agreement, you need to talk to a lawyer.

Kind regards,

Alastair.
