I've seen the System Profiler application , which is showing all the applications installed in the machine. Any pointers on how this application is getting the information about applications , kernel extensions and frameworks .

You can always invoke the "system_profiler" command line utility. Pass '-h' to it for usage info. You'll probably want to use the following, based on what you've said:


system_profiler SPApplicationsDataType SPExtensionsDataType SPFrameworksDataType

You could also pass '-xml' if you want the output in "XML" form. It's actually just a plist, so you can then deserialise that in your app, if you're using Cocoa.
