Hi Michael,
It sounds like these are very basic questions (and you haven't been
specific enough about what you're doing to get a worthwhile answer
straightaway), so it might be a good idea for you to read one of the
many excellent books on Cocoa programming, or to run through some of
the tutorials you'll find on the 'Net (Google for "cocoa tutorial").
Scott Stevenson's Cocoa Dev Central site in particular has a number
of articles aimed at beginners, complete with screenshots to help you
along the way. That can be found here:

As far as books go, Aaron Hillegass's "Cocoa Programming for Mac OS
X" is frequently recommended. If you're a more experienced
programmer, I used to like Scott Anguish, Eric Buck and Don
Yacktman's "Cocoa Programming", though it's getting a bit out of date
now.
