It's an undocumented method, but as far back as 10.3.9 NSSpellChecker will respond to "learnWord:"

As of Leopard, it is now documented. See the Leopard AppKit release notes for details.

The NSSpellChecker header file may, but the HTML documentation doesn't. I've filed a report via the online documentation feedback form.
