Are there any examples of how to use the new effects in interface builder. I'd like to experiment with them however I cannot seem to get anything to work and I have not been able to find examples how how to set things up correctly.

Have you ticked on the wantsLayer checkbox?

The "Appearance" (Alpha and Shadow), "Content Filters", "Background Filters", and "Compositing Filter" properties only affect layer-backed views.

So, as Uli suggested, if you want to experiment with these effects you'll need to tick the "Wants Core Animation Layer" checkbox for the view itself or one of its ancestors.
