Along that line, using the standard window background color would work best for you. See NSColor's class methods for a large list of standard system colors (including "colors" which are actually patterns).


In answer to your question, you might want to google "CTGradient". Apple constantly does "their own thing" with UI, but they *are* pretty well aware of their own plans for future OS UI changes ... ;-)
