Making sounds

I would like to play the sound of pure sine waves or combinations of sine waves, by means of a Cocoa application. NSSound will play sound files, so the trick seems to be to create the appropriate files synthetically, using the mathematical functions. Does anyone know how to create sound files in this way?
I've looked at AU Lab which doesn't seem to be what I need. It also seems too versatile for my simple needs, and further there doesn't seem to be any way to combine it or link it to a Cocoa application.

   Thanks, Jim
