Hi Glen,
Yes I understand that. I will have to modify/resize the UI once I
have the strings in there. But the people who we are sending the
strings out to be localized do not know anything about IB, so I
don't want to confuse them or have them screw anything up. Once the
strings have been localized we will go back and look a the UI and
modify the sizes, alignment, etc. of the UI elements. I just thought
there was an easy way to get the text out and put it back in the UI
elements. I guess I will change the code to read all the strings
from the .strings file, and we can send that out, and not have to
worry about that part.
An approach that I have taken in the past is to add code to grow
views, windows, controls etc according so that the the layout will
adjust to the text. If, when you sketch the views in interface, you
are careful to make the views too small for their text you can test
your code as you develop it. Generally the arrangement of UI elements
is reasonably simple so this is not to hard to do.
The advantage of doing this is that once you get the code right then
incremental translations will not require you to re-adjust all the
views again. Something I have found is that during a product life-
cycle there is almost always a delta in localization - and this is
generally taken care of.
The disadvantages of this approach are
1. *you* have to do this work, and you have to check it, maintain it
and fix it.
2. Localizers are not forced to look the UI in the NIBs as they go.
The localizers I have worked with have erred on the side of diligence
so really the time at the engineering end has been the biggest
drawback. The previous project I worked was on a large application
that was localized into 10 languages so it was at times quite a load
and we decided to move away from this approach. Most Macintosh
localizers are comfortable working with NIBs.
The current project I am working on is a port of a PC application with
a small amount of UI to OSX. In this situation I will adjust the views
to the string sizes when they load - amongst other things the
localizers do not work on OSX - so it is better if I take this load on.
Best regards
Alan Shouls
