Note also that the system always prioritizes extension over HFS type.
This is unfortunate since file extensions often conflict. Consider .img
which is used by zillions of different formats. No matter what a file's
HFS type, you'll get com.apple.disk-image-ndif.
Note also that there is no standard file metadata that you can attach a
UTI too. This would be handy for files you create yourself, and would
be a nice replacement for the HFS type.
