A somewhat related question. It seems that the gatekeeper is mostly
concenrned with the signature on the installer package and not the software
it installed. If the package is signed by Apple Developer's Installer
certificate, gate keeper does not complain (just askes to ok the
installation) and then never sais anything about the app that was installed
(though it is NOT signed by Apples Developer's Software certificate).
So is it important to sign the code as well and not just the package (from
the usability and end user experience point of view)?

I believe your app has to be code-signed. But any valid code signature
should work.

However, I don't think you can self sign it can you?
Yes you can. Apple recommend DeveloperID instead though these days. It’s
$99, pretty easy. Just do it.
