For music and long sounds, use AVAudioPlayer (AVFoundation framework).
(Assumes Lion.)
For an easier wrapper around OpenAL, I recommend (my) ALmixer.
http://playcontrol.net/opensource/ALmixer/
It optimizes for both long and short sounds and allows you full access
to the OpenAL 3D system.
