Conversing via private e-mail last night, we figured out that the problem was triggered by having a combination of an NSSplitView and an NSToolbar in the same window. Doing this even in a simple test-case app causes the split view to wig out. If you delete the toolbar, it works fine.

Bug report filed: rdar://11828261 .
