Font Book is pretty nice, but it’s only partway there.
It can’t show the font names in the font itself (which isn’t always what I want, but sometimes is.)
It can’t preview lots of fonts at once. (You can select as many fonts as you want in the middle pane, but the right pane only displays the first few dozen of them, presumably for performance reasons. And each preview is rather large, so you can only see a handful at a time, and only shows an alphanumeric repertoire; no custom text.)
It doesn’t support tagging. You can fake it by using collections, but it’s awkward because you have to drag a font repeatedly to multiple collections to tag it, and there’s no way to see what tags/collections a font already has.
It won’t display specimen sheets, or components thereof like cascades, blocks of body text, and so on.
(By contrast, look at FontCase by Bohemian Coding, which does pretty much all of those, although the UI is sometimes awkward. I was just reminded of its existence, and now I’m figuring out whether to buy it vs. have fun writing my own.)
