It's probably being done by this QuickLook plugin:

qlmanage -m plugins
  public.plain-text -> /System/Library/QuickLook/Text.qlgenerator

There's no sample code for that, but there is QuickLookSketch for the Sketch sample app. QuickLook puts the turned-down corner on for you.
