Sounds like a WindowServer crash. If that happens, your entire login session vanishes and you drop back to the login screen. This is not a new type of thing (if anything, its more rare than it used to be.)

It’s also not a Cocoa development question, so it really doesn’t belong here. It feels like there’s been a flood of “My Mac did something bad” threads here and on xcode-users lately, and they’re getting in the way. Post them on apple.stackexchange.com or file bug reports with Apple instead.
