Sounds like the crash hit something that took down your login session but wasn't bad enough to take down the entire machine. For example a WindowServer crash will drop you back to the login window without a restart. Only kernel panics and a handful of other very low-level crashes will cause a restart.
If you see this crash repeatedly, please check Console.app for log messages and crashes at the time of the logout and file a bug report with them.

If I recall correctly, you can choose whether or not to relaunch apps when you deliberately log out or restart, but relaunch is automatic for involuntary crashes.
