In general, AFAIK, pretty much all monitor profiling software will not balk
at contrast adjustments the way it is currently set. Remember that contrast
controls the amount of luminance (or white point) spit out by the tube. So,
if a CRT is "brighter" than another, it still is acceptable for profiliing,
as profiling is independent of the amount of light radiated on the monitor
faceplace. The reasons many people will set their tube at different
contrasts is just a matter of confort and dependent on the state of wearing
out. On my old 4 year old Mitsu, to give you an idea, once calibrated at
5000K (call me old fashion), I get about 85 cd/m2. At 6500K, you could
easily get 120 cd/m2 and more! As long as it does not go below 75 where,
apparently, our brain will cease to have the impression of white. And as
long as it does not fatigue your eyes, you can leave the contrast pretty
much at the factory setting value, which is very often full blast.
