Rick,

From your post I think your are right on the money. Here is the rub about some scanners and dynamic range values. Some vendors use their own special gray scales to determine their scanners dynamic range and then market those numbers.I found this out about 4 years about when I was comparing a Polaroid to a Nikon. When I called up Polaroid and stated that I was measuring their scanners DR with my set of gray scales that I had been measuring scanners with since 1980 ( of course I update them) they said this method would not work and I would get incorrect density values.

<The other scanner Aztec (PMT) which is modified Howtek 8000, claims to have a D-Max of
4.0.> Going back to 1994 I measured the density range of the Howtec 4000 and it was 3.8D.
