If your images are of any significant size, don't import. Instead,

I found that FileMaker is virtually
unworkable with Tiffs, but is acceptably rapid with JPEGs, even a maximum
quality JPEG.
My experience is similar. I use 1024x640 medium-quality JPEG images
for visual references -- these work quickly enough in FileMaker. But
I have 1545x1170 TIFF images from which I make note cards and
postcards from within FileMaker. Although they are less than three
times bigger, they are MUCH slower in FileMaker than as external
files.
I guess that shows FileMaker image performance is size-bound rather
than processor-bound, as it certainly takes more processing to decode
a JPEG than a TIFF. Except for being foolishly superstitious about
using TIFF images for print, I might try the max quality JPEG idea,
but I've found JPEG artifacts in giclee prints that I didn't see on
the screen, so I'm leery.
As for import scripting. I'd like one too...
I've got a lot of work to do this week, then I'm going away the next,
but if I get bored, I'll try to throw a folder-action AppleScript
together and post it.
