My take on it is that the ColorSync monitors calibrate themselves

So if you let the monitor calibrate itself and then use a quality
instrument to profile it you get a good result. The benefit is you
have a self-calibrating device that will keep itself in check longer
than a normal monitor and will require reprofiling less often. If
only printers would do this too!
Steve,
It sounds like a good plan, but how do you go about it? In order to
create a profile with a colorimeter, don't you have to calibrate it
with the same colorimeter first? And if that calibration is on top
of the Colorsync calibration you're back in the catch 22 about how
to disable the colorsync calibration. Can you give a step by step on
this?
Well, I hope the Color Vision folks don't mind me posting this blurb
but they are a pretty supportive group, open with their information
and I will also suggest that their products are great for this task.
(enough kissing up... here it is)
This is from the read me than comes w/ Photocal - the software
included with the Monitor Spyder from Color Vision.
Apple Studio Display
If you are using PhotoCal with the Apple Studio Display:
) Ensure that both the USB and Video connectors from the monitor are
plugged into the computer.
) Press the ColorSync button on the monitor to open the Monitors &
Sound Control Panel.
) Set Contrast to maximum.
) Set Brightness to 50%.
) Click the Color button at the upper-right of the Monitors & Sound
Control Panel.
) Select 6500 from the White Point menu.
) Select 1.8 from the Gamma menu.
) Select None from the Ambient Light menu.
) Click Preferences.
) Set Calibration Accuracy to Pro.
) Mark the checkbox to disable Brightness and Contrast controls.
) Click OK.
) Click Recalibrate.
) After ColorSync has calibrated the monitor:
) Click the Calibrate
button at the lower-left of the ColorSync profiles list.
) Click on PhotoCal in the list of available calibration plug-ins
then click OK.
) Follow the onscreen instructions and the following suggestions:
) in the Set Contrast screen - make no changes to the Contrast level.
) In the Set Brightness screen - make no changes to the Brightness level.
) In the Identify Display Controls screen - choose 'has no color
temperature controls'.

This works - I have done it multiple times for clients. I should note
that I have sold the Spyder and mc7 into these clients where they
bought the ColorSync monitor only to be confused by color management
(no surprise) and a little disappointed in the results of the
automated calibration etc of the displays. As I mentioned before, I
tell them that the calibration is OK they just need better profiles.
Enter a colorimeter and the above procedure and we've been good to go.

Steve Upton
