Where do I start....
OK. I live in Hawaii and do Fine Art Reproductions
Here is my Equipment list:
2 Epson 9000's
2 copies of BestColor 4.2.1 RIP
G4 with a Apple Studio Display 21
X-Rite DTP41
BetterLight 6K Digital Scan Back
Howtek 4500 drum scanner
Software:
ScanOpen
PrintOpen
ColorSynergy
ProfileMaker 3.1 ( Just the New DigiCamera Module)
ColorVision Optical
Chromix ColorThink
And of course PhotoShop 6.0
Yeah I know I got a lot of stuff.
I guess lets start with Monitor Calibration:
I first do a internal monitor calibration (built into display) 1.8 gamma,
6500K
Here lies my first question.. Confusion #1..
I come from a pre-press Color Separation background and we also used 5000K I
also been reading a lot about setting gamma to 1.0 to be linearized.
Then If I use my BetterLight Scan Back to shoot art I always light the art
first, get proper exposure then I shoot the ColorChecker DC chart first then
I remove the chart and capture the art.
I then create a custom input profile using ProfileMaker 3.1 based on the
ColorChecker DC chart. I think I am doing this correctly no confusion here.
Only thing is the BetterLight software is not icc aware so I have to apply
the input profile somewhere. Here lies my confusion number 2.
I was told by BestColor to basically use the Input Profile created with
ProfileMaker as the "Reference" profile and use my CMYK Printer Profile I
created with PrintOpen as the Paper Profile. But doing this I do not get the
benefits of What you see is what you print! So if I open the raw RGB tiff
scan in PhotoShop 6.0 I then have to deal with Working Space etc. I spoke
with people from ColorSynergy and they said for me to make a Custom
PhotoShop workspace using there software based on my Output CMYK profile to
get an accurate preview in PhotoShop. But then the I have to apply my input
profile in PS, So how do I do that? In PS 6.0 Should I load my input profile
created in Profilemaker by doing a assign profile? I assume if I assign a
profile first then do a Convert to profile using my cmyk output profile from
PrintOpen is all ok? Basically don't let BestColor do any color management.
Send cmyk files to the rip. Then when I do the convert to profile in PS 6.0
what Conversion engine should I use? Should I use the Heildelberg engine
since my output profile was created using PrintOpen? I then use the
Relative Colormetric Intent, but should I use absolute Colormetric since I
am trying to match the original art work to the best of my ability? For now
I have had the Use Black Point Comp., and Use Dither both selected. Does
this sound right?
I am getting very confused between how the different icc profiles mingle
together in PS. I have a WorkingSpace Profile, Input Profile(scanner)
Monitor Profile and Output Profile.
Can anyone give me a hand here.
My main goal is to have the best What you see is what I print display and be
able to match my original art the best I can. I realize that this is not
100% possible to do but I at least want to use all my tools to the best of
there ability.
Thanks
