The problem photographers and art directors have isn't limited to most
accurate recording of scene values possible under circumstances, but also
aesthetic context and interpretation. Many things require some of this, and
nailing down a middle gray would be flat wrong here. And image creators need
some means of passing "aesthetic intention" downstream with some assurance of
it surviving. The transparency has served that function fairly well, but
color managed digital can do the same thing and more.
Perhaps reference gray could be attached to the file last? How might that
work in practice?
