The response from the bad Roland demo was the files were in cmyk.
That explains a lot!
Is there anyway I can work in cmyk and have a good quality large format
inkjet output?
Sure, if you're using dye based ink. Correct my memory if I'm wrong,
but I believe you said the demo was using the Hexachrome ink set. If
you're trying to print to Hexachrome from CMYK, the colors simply
aren't there!
The HP I saw printing was working in cmyk and it was making very nice
output.
Again, correct my memory if wrong, but I believe you said the HP was
using dye. You've got to compare apples with apples! ANY optimized
printer will produce better output than the BEST printer than has
been pessimized! :-)
1) Dyes are bright, but don't last long.
2) Pigments last long, but are dull.
3) Hexachrome inksets expand a pigment gamut to almost that of dyes,
but you have to feed it RGB, because CMYK clips the R-G data, which
is what the extra two inks are for.
