So what's up with that? (Or, is this old news?)

It's old news -:).

Newcolor 7000 saves out 16 bit Lab TIFF or 8 bit Lab TIFF, optionally. 16 bit RGB TIFF or 8 bit RGB TIFF, optionally. And if anybody wants it, then equally 16 bit or 8 bit CMYK. There is now also enhanced support for EPS with RGB and Lab, if you are using a color server of some kind. All exports are tagged with the ICC profile.

The ColorSync filters read 16 bit Lab TIFF as they should.

At the moment we're waiting for Pshop 6 which was widely hoped to support 16 bit Lab in the open format, rather than only it's interal psd format.

(Sort of the left hand holding back the TIFF spec and the right hand moving the psd format forward, sans co-ordination -:).)
