Depends on where you are in the chain. In my case, the OS has already ripped
the page into RGB pixels and I know (at least I think I do) the source
profile. Thus, armed with a CMYK profile I was hoping to convert the page
data directly from source RGB to printer CMYK.
You could use the same technique that the Epson drivers use for
determining the source profile. If there is a supplied source (like
Photoshop and other apps can now supply) then use it, otherwise use
the monitor profile specified in the CS control panel.
I don't see why this would not work and work well. I also don't
really see a problem with the 6 channel printers that are in use
today. This feature is explicitly for advanced users and I can see
some advanced users using 6 channel profiling software like
ColorBlind or Monaco.
Overall this seems like a good idea. I suppose it comes down to
manufacturer desire (your client). It is tough to determine how many
people would use such a feature as well but I'm a supporter of
advanced feature sets." If you build it, they will come" is better
then "if you don't build it they will be force to hack away"
