I think it's confusing but it's probably Americans that are doing it
wrong.

I always preferred metric SI units: kilo, Mega, Giga, Tera, Peta... no language differences, no opinion differences, just look it up.

It has always bothered me, however, that units less than Mega are lower case, rather than making all units greater than unity upper case. ("kilo" is never spelled upper case, but it should if it were consistent. :-)
