you can optionally buy a license key from G-McB that will let the software
work without the 'lino connected. no idea how much that is, but I just
called my rep to find out because I want to use the software on my PC laptop
in my office or on the road. of course he's not in and it's probably
expensive.
if you want to take other readings (density, reflectance etc) with the unit
you have to buy their Keywizard software for $299. Measuretool won't do
this. I've ordered Keywizard but don't have it yet.

the Peracom USB-serial adapter for the Spectroscan did not ship with any
drivers for the Mac. I spent half the day on the phone and the web tracking
it down but once installed it works fine. comes with the cable too.
