I ran Eric's test (both LAB and RGB) with the exception of the application
of the suggested USSheetfed or Euroscale profiles (not having them
available)... the banding wasn't as much a concern considering out of gamut
colors as was the LIME GREEN to WHITE anomaly.
This seemed however to be limited to profiles built with versions older than
Printopen ICC 4.0. POICC4's improved Yellow saturation is key, as the CMYK
percentages of the suspect LIME area were almost doubled in C and increased
by a third more Y in the PO4 tables. Much better looking and much better
printing.
The POICC4 print profile I built for my test used the standard shipped 'SWOP
Whitebase' with no GCR, 370UCR and a 95K Limit... literally "out of the box"
settings for the Whitebase table. Large, medium and small sized profiles
seemed not to matter at all.
