It looks like a SpectroCam kind of thing (or licensee? or fighting
patents?);
the latter. it is similar is design and function to the SpectroCam. I
think they may have better luck manufacturing it though and I'm sure
they will have a stronger marketing and sale presence out of the
chute. GretagMacbeth holds several important patents in the field of
color measurement and manufacturers in that past have had to deal
with this position. Apparently SpectroStar is in the position of
infringing on some of these patents and it will be interesting to see
what happens.
but the website doesn't give any clue as to the technology or
specs.

It's clear that marketing-wise they're positioning it for the creative
group, designers, etc.
That's for sure. We have more information on our site but have yet to
put up the full specs

But it's not clear how would they prevent it from predating SpectroLino's
market, unless it's less precise or unless they keep it from being
supported by other software.
The precision is quite high but as I was explaining to the
GretagMacbeth folks themselves tonight at their launch party, I
really don't see it in direct competition with the Lino/scan. I see
it more in competition with the faster-but-more effort involved
products like the SpectroCam and DTP41.
Or will we see a $1000 end-of-life Spectrolino offer next week?:)
No sign of that but they have dropped the prices on some of there bundles.
