The problem are the inks. You *can* profile these printers but the question
then becomes, what light source do you want to look at them under? I
profiled a 9500 a few weeks back using ProfileMaker Pro and a DTP-41UV/T.
Under Solux lights, the prints looked pretty awful. Under the Tungsten
lights the photographer had in his studio, they looked a lot better. Yes, I
know, the prints *should* look better under daylight but the inks are so
screwy that one is lucky to find any light source where the prints look
acceptable. I found that using the "Preserve Gray Axis" option in
ProfileMaker Pro seemed to produce better results with this kind of printer.
It's not a fix for the numerous problems with these pigmented inks but it
does help.
The pigmented inks are so difficult to deal with it's almost easier to
profile the printer and place cc balancing lights in front of the light
source until you get something that looks good. I'm half way kidding with
you and yet, it would likely work. It's just amazing how the light source
affects the color perception you get from viewing these prints. As for
"perfect" I doubt it's possible. A profiled print from standard Epson inks
look significantly better.
