To the best of my knowledge, the Fiery doesn't support a proofing setup in
Colorwise Pro. You can apply a custom output profile to incoming RGB as long
as you configure the RGB input to be the same space as the image. But, I
don't think you can load up a profile for proofin the the Simulation
section. In all honesty, I haven't tried it.
-They do not currently own the Color Calibrator device. Is there any
other way to calibrate the 9000 without using a
colorimeter/densitometer that's tethered to the rip/software? Is this
an expensive device? (They don't do a lot of color, so money may be
an object...of course, doing analog proofs when you could be doing
digital just screams "money is no object...")
There is always the old fashioned method of printing 3 color gray ramps
along with a K ramp to get a good linearization to "calibrate" the output by
hand. Success with this method is totally dependant on the skill of the
user. Otherwise, a desnitometer like a DTP 32 from X-Rite can be run from
the Mac/ColorwisePro to calibrate.
-I see that Colorwise ProTools lets you "create additional profiles
by modifying existing ones". Are there any restrictions to the
profiles it will accept?
I believe they just need to be ICC compliant. Or you can hand tweak thier
existing ones via ColorwisePro.
-Any tricks to using the CW ProTools on a mac workstation? We
installed the application yesterday, but it wouldn't connect to the
Fiery, although I'm sure the IP address was correct (the downloader
and spooler connect fine). When trying to connect Pro Tools to the
rip, it generates the message "device is either busy, or wrong
software version"..the same message is generated if one tries to
connect to any device on the network.
This is very inclear in their manuals. Print out a configuration sheet from
the fiery and look in the Server section of the sheet. It will have a name
of the fiery. In the Colorwise setup box there are three input boxes, the
first one you can name it whatever you want, the second one is the IP
address, the third needs to be the name of the server as it appears in that
Server section of the config sheet. Type it exactly as it appears there. It
is case sensitive.
I'd be interested in whatever alternatives you might suggest. Because
of their workflow, they prefer that the color solution reside on
their plotter rip, as they wish to send raster data from the
PCC/Artworks rip to the plotter, and then release that same raster
file to the imagesetter upon proof approval.
After it is all said and done, you'll probably be happier with the proofing
results when the color is handled by something other than the Fiery.
Photoshop or CompassPro XT in Quark are probably going to do a better job.
But I may not be understanding the workflow completely.
Also, if you have a densitometer to read the basic density ramps in the
calibration section of ColorwisePro, compare the read densities to the
target's. If the read densities are greater than the target's, and you want
more saturation, alter the target's densities to match the read numbers.
Then hand tweak to get the lightness of the output to be what you want.
If proofing is the goal, you may prefer lower max densities to match your
final output.
