Eye-One Pro is $1500 with minimal software.
The "minimal" software with the Eye-One Pro is quite a easier to use and far
more elegant. But you really need to forget that package and go for the
$3000 Eye-One bundle that creates output profiles because now you have a
package based on ProfileMaker Pro's superb color science, can deal with
scanner, display and output profiles and with the free Eye-One share (which
you could still use with the Eye-One Pro $1500 package) do spot readings and
other color work. The "minimal" software package ($1500) from GretagMacbeth
is FAR more robust in just doing displays than what you get with Spectrocam.
You have the control over the RGB guns and the ability to set black point
using the instrument. The Eye-One is also USB (which is handy) and is
powered by that USB cable so you don't need an additional power supply like
the SpectroCam.
Both packages above don't allow creation of output profiles. So consider
what an additional cost to you would be with both instruments to make
profiles. With the SpectroCam, you could get away for a bit less money
depending on what profiling package you get that supports it (You could for
example drop another $999 for Matchbox and chuck the ColorMouse). For $1500
you'd have the Eye-One Pro software package which is really quite nice and
produces very good output profiles as you'd expect from GretagMacbeth. Of
course, as GretagMacbeth starts sending out SDK's (which I believe they have
done) other software companies will support the Eye-One internally into
their own products.
What GretagMacbeth could consider would be producing a small utility that
would allow export of spectral data to a formatted text file so one could
import that data into existing profiling products much like you can do with
Spectrocam. But I don't know if that's a good idea for them considering that
they do supply a very good profiling package for an additional $1500.
