I think they are a good idea, but they have been very poorly implemented
to date; part of which may have to do with how vague the ICC spec is in
regards to CMMs.

No question. I don't like it either. But that doesn't mean it's good
advice to tell people not to use it, and to use the Apple or Heidelberg
CMM instead (or any other CMM for that matter except possibly the Imation
CMM - I either haven't tested it in regards to scum dots or I've
forgotten the results.)
While I haven't heard anything from anyone at Adobe, I'm fairly confident
that those who have worked on the Adobe (ACE) engine would like to see a
CMM for ColorSync (and maybe ICM also) so that it can be used in other
applications. However the powers that be at Adobe don't seem very
interested in making it easy to use Adobe technology in non-Adobe
products. That's Adobe's mentality. And because each product and
department seems to have fifty managers, making requests to individual
people at Adobe is so ineffective the request might as well be made to
the corporate operator (or his dog.)

It would be nice if it was better than just OK. OK is OK for the average
Joe Schmoe. For production level work, I don't think Distiller 5 is where
it needs to be as there are plenty of problems with it from what I've
been told by a very knowledgable PDF evangelist. In regards to color,
I'll believe it when I see it, but so far sounds reasonable.
