Not necessarily. IF you have a dumb scanner as far as profiles are
concerned, that's quite true. But today, there are a handful of scanners
who's software is smart enough to use profiles much like Photoshop. The
Flextight scanner I use from Imacon is one such example. I can build a
profile, load it (and my output space) and get a soft proof so I can pull
curves, do selective color and so forth while using the profile. The
software is smart enough to allow this. With scanners that have no idea
about how to utilize an input and output profile (with a soft proof), you
have to lock them down, scan exactly as you created the profile and edit
latter.
