A document with three images, all of the same profile, was 512K without
the profiles and 5.3megs with.

The whole ICC profile is embedded, no subsetting.

There are two embedding strategies, document-default (a sort of simple tagging mechanism) and object-specific which is unambiguous cf the iQueue manual, for instance.

Note that InDesign only prints CMYK PostScript, but exports ICCBased / CIEBased / DeviceColors to PDF 1.3.

QuarkXPress prints deviceRGB and deviceCMYK (not both at the same time), but not Lab which is converted to deviceColors without the benefit of color management (you'll have switched off the Quark CMS extension to try to export Lab along with RGB). Anytime the Quark CMS is on, only deviceCMYK is written into PostScript.
