Did you ever use a SOFA RIP?
I was using M Series imagesetters when Berthold released the SOFA RIP.
We reckoned they called it SOFA because that was where you would spend most
of your time waiting for the pages to rip :-)
If I remember rightly it would take around 20 minutes to rip a single black
page with text and vector line art only -- and that didn't include imaging
to film!
I can also remember buying one of the first Hyphen Mac RIPs around 1992.
They were really fast (for their day) but I used to have to sleep by the
imagesetters when we had loads of 12" vinyl sleeves to run -- just in case
the RIP crashed and none of the films sets were ready for the morning.
Ahh, those were the days.
