I recently advised a client to buy those desktop articulated-arms anodized
black lamps made by a company called Solux. I have yet to hear from this
client about how they like the lamps ;)
The reason I recommended Solux is because I was at the AIC 2000 show
recently, in Rochester, and while visiting the exhibition, I ran into the
Solux booth. Nearby was also the Minolta booth. So I decided to borrow one
of Minolta's portable colorimeters to compare daylight to the Solux lamp.
First, I measured the color temperature of the direct sunlight, shining
outside at about 3:00 pm -- it gave a 5500K reading (tilted the Lux scale
over 10000!). There were no clouds in the sky, that afternoon, just the sun
surrounded by the late June skylight. Then, I came back indoors to measure
the color temperature of the Solux lamp (halogen-type). The one I measured
was mounted in that desktop lamp I recommended my client: 4700K.
Is that close enough for your needs? And the whole thing cost $150 US. The
bulb alone, I think, sells for 10 to 20 dollars. You can find Solux on the
Web.
My two cents.
