Glenn,
It was nice to see you at our co marketing event (with Epson, Rich &
Associates and Colorbyte) last week. This was the first showing I
know of for this Macintosh Based Rip. I think it was just released
last week so It is very new to the market up to this point. While I
did not get to play with it to much the day before you saw it, I did
quiz the Epson tech support guy. It works just like the hardware
based Fiery rip version 1.5. This is the version that claims to
support CMYK only workflows and ICC profiles. I personally have had
a hard time getting version 1.5 work well. It is also my
understanding that the Fiery based Mac rip is $999.99 give or take a
few pennies. Also this software is a ram hungry application. We
could not get it to run without at least 512 ram on the imac (we
actually used 1gig of ram) and it requires that the Mac cpu to be
dedicated to only this application so you cant run other apps so I am
told.
As for rips in general, I have a feeling by years end we will see
more Mac based rips in the market by other vendors.
