Andy,
It does not sound as though your client
is versed in ICC color management if the
client is dicussing modifying Photoshop settings.
I would work with the prepress department and
press room to implement ICC color management. I
would print an IT8.7/3 press characterization target.
Next, I would create several "press profiles" with
varying levels of TAC and GCR.
For example you could create four profiles with
the following TAC:
280%
300%
320%
330%
Next I would create a page with test images or
purchase a test sheet from GATF already assembled.
I would use each profile and make the cmyk separations
for each profile. The the pages would be printed
on press. Now you will have concrete represenation
of how a job in production will reproduce with several
different press profiles that you can display
for your clients.
It is important to test each criteria in the
reproduction system.
There are many options you have to improve the
quality of the product, decrease costs and increase
client satisfacation using ICC technologies.

One of our recent brochures had an image on the cover which printed
somewhat dark...client acceptable, but slightly dark. The printer
suggested the seps looked "muddy" implying there was too muck black
in the midtones. His suggestion was to take out black...but , he was
vague about how to do this. This was a digital shot, converted to
CMYK; SWOP, coated, 20%,GCR, Heavy, Gamma2.2. Dot Gain 20%. Any
suggestions would be appreciated.
