OK - so it's not a huge book, but it is informative. Apple posted a
new technote about ColorSync on X. I just saw it late yesterday.

It seems like the first half is good for general consumption and the
second gets into the new APIs etc.
It does raise a few new questions but it's a good start at answering
many of mine.
