Micheal,
you are corect. you use the absolute
intent when proofing. The reason for
using this intent is the following.
The proofer has a far larger color
gamut than the press. The "extra"
colors have to be clipped, so the
proofer's color gamut matches up with
the press. Once the gamuts match, the
proof will reasonable match the press
sheet.
I have a color gamut chart or two
that I will find an email you. This concept
is better understood visually.

I have talked to a couple of you about this
and have seen Bruce discuss this a few times.
One thing I forget or never saw.
When I want to proof a CMYK file to an RGB device
I understand to "convert to profile" my CMYK file
to my printer profile.
My question is - - do I use ABSOLUTE rendering ?
